Ålesund to Runde with boat and bike

Shipyards, fishing and birdwatching.

A bicycle route starting with a boat trip from Ålesund. From the port in Hareid it will take you through the shipyard town of Ulsteinvik and to the bird island of Runde. All on paved and mostly quiet roads, but some parts on main roads with more traffic. The route on land is 51 km, one way.

In Ulsteinvik you will find all you need to refill, coffee or food. Ulsteinvik is also a community which still rely on shipbuilding, delivering everything from small trawlers to yachts and cruise ships. On the other islands you pass you will might notice some of the vessels from the modern fishing fleet based in this area.

The island of Runde has a lot to offer for visitors, and is especially hectic in April when the birds are migrating north. This also brings a crowd of birdwatchers. In summer you can catch a boat from the harbour to get to see the bird cliff from the seaside, and you might spot a puffin working hard to feed it’s chickens. If you have time, leave your bicycle in Goksøyr and go hiking the last miles to Runde lighthouse. There are also places to stay on the island, or you will find hotels in nearby Fosnavåg and Ulsteinvik.

Be careful to cross bridges or be close to the sea in strong winds. The waves can be unpredictable. This is still a bike trip with a lot to offer all year. — View in full at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/31664188
