Skreiabanen – from Reinsvoll to Skreia

Along old railway tracks through forests and fields.

Following this route along the old railway line Skreiabanen brings you through the open landscapes of the Toten region. You will be surrounded by open farmland producing vegetables and cereals, bordered by undulating hills on a distance. At the end of the line you will be welcomed by the glittering light from Lake Mjøsa. The length of this route is 22,6 km, one way.

Start this route from the railway station Reinsvoll on the Gjøvik line. The first part is on a trafficked road for 4,6 km, so take care. The start of the railway line can be a little hard to find, but have a close look at the map to find the bridge you are crossing above the main road to get down on the old track.

The best place to stop for a snack is in the village Lena. Here you’ll find everything from restaurants to coffee shops. The old station area has been turned into an activity park, with challenges for both junior and senior cyclists.

The last station on the route is Skreia. The station building itself is a fairytale, built in timber in the typical Swiss Style from the fin de siècle. This is also a little village where you can find a snack. From here you can turn back, or follow the signed route Mjøstråkk north or south. If you need a dip, find your way five kilometres to the south, to Totenvika. Here you can dive into the lake, and this is also the stop for the Skibladner, the paddle steamer which has been servicing the ports around the lake Mjøsa since 1856.

This route can easily be combined with train to or from Reinsvoll and with a trip on the lake onboard the old paddle steamer Skibladner.

This route is best experienced in late spring, summer or early autumn, with early August as the best choice if you want to see some of the harvest and still be able to get on the boat. Late August and September is also great.
