If you are planning a trip and you prefer asphalt, or if you’re heading for a gravel adventure, it isn’t always easy to know what you will find just from the map. On the coast, most roads are paved with asphalt, but in the inner parts of Norway many of the less trafficked roads are gravel. There is a map where much of this can be discovered. The Norwegian Road Authorities has a useful map on the Internet where it’s possible to choose between different kind of layers and paving on the roads. It a bit technical, here are some prepared links:

Zoom out to find your destination, and zoom back in to see the top layer of the road.
Map with public paved (asphalt) roads: https://www.vegvesen.no/nvdb/vegkart/v2/#kartlag:geodata/hva:(~(farge:’0_0,filter:(~(operator:’213d,type_id:1216,verdi:(~3615))),id:241))/@279402,6744149,9.829637365597215
Zoom out to find your destination, and zoom back in to see the top layer of the road.
Please remember that this shows only the quality of public roads. Many of the smaller roads on the map are private, but open to use. Sometimes you’ll get the best information by comparing the two maps.
