Ålesund to Geiranger through Norangdal

Bring your bike through some of Scandinavia’s most dramatic landscapes.

Experience the Sunnmøre region with attractions like the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund, Hjørundfjord surrounded by its alpine peaks, the spectacular Norangdal valley and the tourist hotspot Geiranger. This cycle route takes you through some of Scandinavias most exciting landscapes.

All roads are paved and very quiet. Highest point is only just above 300 meters. Plan to reach the few ferries between Standal and Leknes. The route on land is 67 km.

If you need to fill up it is recommended to have your afternoon tea at the Union Hotel at Øye, a historic hotel visited by royal families and celebrities throughout the years. In Hellesylt you can find a combined coffee and bookshop, for pastries and a cappuccino. Not many places to fill up with food off season or on a Sunday, but weekdays you will find a small grocery shop not far from Leknes.

Norangdal is also a perfect base to go hiking in the Sunnmøre Alps, with the steep trail up to majestic Slogen as the most popular challenge.

The route on road ends at Hellesylt, where you from April to October can catch a ferry through the beautiful and dramatic Geirangerfjord. From Geiranger it is possible to find a boat back to Ålesund in the summer season, either by Hurtigruten or Fjordcruise.

If you need to stay overnight on this ride, Union Hotel at Øye or Villa Norangdal are highly recommended. In Hellesylt there is also a Youth Hostel, and in Geiranger a lot of choices. Always try to book in advance, as it can be quite full during holidays, and often closed in the low season.

The area can be crowded in July and early August, but you can get it almost on your own much of the year. A trip for spring, summer, autumn, and even winter if the weather is mild. — View in full at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/31660779
